McDonald’s Vegetable Deluxe

McDonald’s Vegetable Deluxe Review

McDonald’s Vegetable Deluxe:

What they say:

Red Pesto veggie goujons with sandwich sauce and shredded lettuce in a sesame topped bun.

Price: £3.09.

Calories: 380 kcal.

From Thursday 3rd January 2019, McDonald’s have launched a new version of their Vegetable Deluxe burger.

As we reported, this sees the discontinuation of the old Vegetable Deluxe (our review here) and in its place is a burger using two of the new veggie goujons which will also be used in the new Spicy Veggie (One) wrap.

McDonald's Vegetable Deluxe New 2019

I will say this now – the new Vegetable Deluxe is a firm step backwards in terms of flavour and enjoyment.

Originally, this wasn’t going to be reviewed today. Instead, I had decided to visit KFC for their Gravy Mega Box.

Inside KFC I placed my order and was told they were not doing it anymore and it had finished Monday.

This is despite the poster on the window outside, on the bus stop opposite and the first image on the carousel on the KFC website being… the Gravy Mega Box.

McDonald’s it is then…

The restaurant I visited is possibly one of the last in the UK to get the upgrade and the transformation is amazing – it’s one of the shiny new black & white branded interiors.

Onto the burger…

Obviously if you are vegetarian you LOVE lettuce as this arrived with a f**k-tonne of the shredded stuff. It was literally swamped in green.

McDonald's Vegetable Deluxe New 2019

As before, the lettuce is joined by the trademark McD’s sesame seeded bun and sandwich sauce, which got a favourable nod in our previous review.

Gone is the nicely spiced coriander and cumin veggie patty. In its place, two veggie goujons which just taste like strong fresh tomato.

Having two goujons is obviously going to draw comparisons with recent chicken LTOs that use two Chicken Selects.

The veggie counterparts do seem to fill more bun area, but you still suffer from some bites having no goujon and/or them being placed haphazardly on the heel of the bun.

McDonald's Vegetable Deluxe New 2019

It’s a smart move from McDonald’s.

I’d wager two of these would cost less than one of the old veggie patties. Plus, they can cross-utilise them in the new veggie Happy Meal wrap and/or the aforementioned Spicy Veggie One.

I was going to review that Monday (when it is Wrap of the Day) but after today I will pass.

McDonald's Vegetable Deluxe New 2019

The veggie goujons look anaemic and as stated earlier, the predominant flavour is tomato.

I thoroughly enjoyed the old veggie patty with the soft blend of Indian-inspired spices, chickpeas and potato but this is terrible.

So bad, that over half of the new Vegetable Deluxe was consigned to the trash. A shame really, and at £3.09 a slight price increase on the old version.

McDonald's Vegetable Deluxe

And what a great time to release new vegetarian options in Veganuary…

I would imagine there are cohorts of our readers that would not bother trying this, but others might. If you do, please let us know what you think and how it compares to the old burger.

After being pleasantly surprised with the previous incarnation of the Vegetable Deluxe I went into this mission full of optimism.

Unfortunately, that optimism ended up in the bin with the rest of the burger.

The packaging might say “Now Even Tastier”, so if you’re looking for a mushed-up tomato, veggie experience for over three pounds this is for you!

McDonald's Vegetable Deluxe New 2019

My review of the old Vegetable Deluxe was the first and last time I would sample it, and the new version will continue that trend.

It was dissapointing enough that McDonalds cared so little for veggie customers that they used to only offer 1 veggie item on their menu (bar filling up on chips or the odd seasonal salad). But at least they had 1 veggie burger. Now they have no veggie burger option at all.

While most of the fast world world is at least begining to face the reality that there are more vegetarians than ever, Maccy’s have instead seemingly decided to roll with being spiteful instead of progressive or even just rational; they’ve removed what was the only vegetarian meal option and replaced it with 2 frazzled textureless mulch filled scraps in a bun with no cheese, relish or pickle …just enough shredded lettuce globbed together with a blop of mayo to veil the otherwise blantent disrepect, disregard and distaste for vegetarians the company make such a blatent effort to promote. In case that blatent dislike wasn’t obvious, they of course charge every vegie customer to eat their bs.

Cheaper to make, quicker to cook and can be used across every veggie option (eg the veggie wrap and happy meals), it means whatever a veggie ordering at Maccy’s chooses they are getting the exact same thing, just in a different guise – the choice is actually to decide to go breadless, opt for a wrap or or have the same tastless who-gives-a-fuck-its-to-tick-the-vegetarian-catered-for-box option in a bun.

It’s a good money making scam, especially as it won’t detrimentally affect thier main cash cw clientelle; meat eating fast food lovers; if i didn’t have the most basic morals, i’d respect them for that much; unfortunately, I have basic morals (in so much as I am not a sociopath) and I also have taste buds, the two prerequisits that make swallowing McDonald’s ‘vegetarian options’ an act of self hate whilst meat eaters enjoy an occasional indulgence for the same price.

Respect KFC more for at least being straight up re their opinion and treatment of vegetarians; ‘we don’t cater for you kind of people, don’t want your custom and don’t value it or you; eat elsewhere’ is somehow refreshingly respectful vs Maccy’s ‘give us your money, eat shit and eff off’ attitude towards vegetarians.

I loved the old veggie deluxe. But for the last two years I’ve suffered soul crushing poverty and couldn’t justify paying the premium when a cheeseburger is way cheaper, just as filling etc (if I could afford that). So when my finances recently started sorting themselves out (hopefully, I still can’t quite bring myself to believe the nightmare is over but fingers crossed) I decided I’d ‘splurge’ on one for the first time in so many years.

I noticed they’d changed shape but I wasn’t too worried. Figured they’d done it as a cost saving…thing so that they could use them for their veggie wraps (which I thought would have been the same veggie or spicy veggie in a different shape) etc

I wouldn’t say they’re the worst but compared to the (gorgeous) old model? McDonald’s have made a big mistake. I suppose it’s a way to wean their veggie customers onto the vegan mcplant. I for one rarely like fake meat and all veggie burgers seem to be going that way.

Bring back the proper old veggie burgers, these new thing look like some supermarket toddler meal and taste horrible, we’ll never buy these ever again.

Absolutely disgusting. Took one bite and threw the rest in the bin. Complete waste of money. ‘Goujons’ tasted of sick. The smallest quantity of lettuce imaginable, exceeded only in sparseness by the tiny portion of sauce. How they have the gall to call this ‘deluxe’ and charge £3 I cannot imagine. The old one was just about tolerable, but this ‘improved’ version defies belief. Somebody should be sacked. And that’s without even touching on the Bacon Double cheeseburger my son had – the thinnest sorriest looking patties you’ve ever seen and tasting like cardboard. No more Maccies ever for us.

I usually eat most veggie things but this was horrible, stacks of lettuce and no flavour goujons.

I did ask the member of staff what was in it, he mentioned pesto & red peppers but I did’nt get either.

Why oh why don’t McDonald’s get vegetarians to help! Last meal I will ever get from them.

I agree that this ‘new burger’ tastes terrible. I loved the old veggie deluxe, but this is completely void of flavour. McDonald’s will not be getting my business for a while. Except when I have a massive Oreo McFlurry craving…

Terrible, had one yesterday, ordered it in a rush, thought it was a burger.
No taste, very bland, loads of lettuce with some mayo.

If I would have know I would have ordered the veggie wrap, at least that has a sauce with it, do more flavour
    Would not reccomend

I’ve eaten McDonalds veggie burgers since they came on the menue….. im not a full vegetarian but i dont eat “procesed meat”. The NEW goujons taste discusting they are bad enough in the wrap but to slap 2 in a bun and pass it off as a burger is criminal.. They havent even changed the picture in any restaurant or web site which still shows the good old patty

Unlucky enough to have one of these today. Honestly the worst thing I have ever eaten at McDonalds. Looked cheap and didn’t cover the bun, tiny amount of lettuce and what appeared to be mayo, tasted unpleasant, had to add ketchup. Had been over deep fried and was full of grease. Checking on ingredients it was mainly yellow split peas.
If I had been served it as a kids option in a pub would have sent it back.
    Don’t go near this.

    It’s a pile of crap.
Bring back the old Veggie Burger! A massive backwards step.

Whoever passed this through quality control, needs firing immediately.
    Tastes sickly.

    Just had one today.
    Awful!
Was tasteless except from the large dollop of Mayonnaise. Goujons don’t even fill the bun, they’re so bland it’s like eating baby food in a crispy shell.
If I had of gone in to eat instead of the drive through i’d most certainly ask for my money back!

Absolutely awful, made both myself and my boyfriend feel physically sick. Bland, oily, tasteless goujons in a lacklustre bun, tastes and looks like it has already been chewed and spat out again. We added ketchup, pickles, cheese, and fresh onion to try and save it but this did little to nothing to improve our disappointment.

Do not go near the ‘improved’ veggie deluxe in any of its hellish incantations. The memory alone makes me want to cry.

Tried this today as I have recently decided to cut down to practically nil my meat consumption and on arriving home from work, feeling lazy and unwilling to cook, gave in to the temptation to get some fast food, which I very rarely do. I was flabbergasted at how disgusting this was. Especially in this moment, with vegan food all the rage, McDonald’s are really not putting much effort into attracting a growing movement among people who recognise that the world can’t continue as it is for much longer and we need to stop chomping on cattle.

Disappointing McDonald’s have come out with a rival to the BK rebel whopper or vegan KFC burger.

I found this vegetable deluxe burger bland and tasteless and the 2 goujon idea just doesn’t work and feels wrong.

    Will never order again.

I am a recent convert to a vegetarian diet and thought I would try one of these ‘Burgers’.
It was awful. It was difficult enough going into McDonalds and not having a Big Mac as normal.
    Won’t be going back!!!

Wish I’d read this before trying the product today. Absolutely disgusting. Forced myself to eat it because I was starving. The price was shocking considering how cheap it obviously is. Never again! Disappointed to hear they used to do a decent veggie burger. Hopefully KFC’s version will be much more satisfying – I’ll be trying it out tomorrow!

My husband and I decided to try the veggie burger deluxe tonight.
One thing to say about the meal-
The only ‘deluxe’ in the burger was seeing the back end of it going into the bin!
We just ate the fries instead.
What a total waste of money and effort.
Suffice to say, we won’t be going back anytime soon.
