McDonald’s Vegetable Deluxe Review

McDonald’s Vegetable Deluxe:

What they say:

A gently spiced patty of chickpeas, coriander and cumin, with iceberg lettuce and a cool sauce, in a toasted sesame seed bun. And approved by the Vegetarian Society.

Price: £2.99.

Calories: 400 kcal.

Fans of the McDonald’s Vegetable Deluxe look away now.

As we reported, the Vegetable Deluxe and Spicy Vegetable Deluxe will be leaving the McDonald’s UK menu from early January 2019.

In their place will be a new burger and wrap – more details here.

I’m reviewing the Vegetable Deluxe for two reasons:

1. it is being discontinued and I’ve never tried it.

2. a commentator criticised our Spicy Vegetable Deluxe review for not actually saying what the patty is like. Fair comment.

McDonald's Vegetable Deluxe

It comes in its own branded box (Admiral will be happy) but a glance inside shows this isn’t much of a looker.

What we have here is a regular McDonald’s seeded bun, a white, mayo-type “sandwich” sauce and iceberg lettuce with a patty consisting of chickpeas, onion and potato with a blend of Indian-inspired spices.

I’m pleased to report back that it is actually pretty decent.

Taste-wise you certainly detect the cumin and coriander which is quite enjoyable – you can definitely tell there’s chickpea and potato in it.

The vegetable patty is a respectable blend of “veggies” and texturally (inside) reminded me a bit of a potato cake.

The slightly crumbed, crispy exterior is commendable and makes way easily to the soft interior. I think it could be the same breadcrumb coating they use on the budget Mayo Chicken. Maybe?

As a vegetarian option or just something different from your usual order, it’s worth trying before it is gone forever.

Not being a massive mayo fan, I wasn’t overly looking forward to the sandwich sauce, but this is quite good as a pairing for the veggie patty.

Personally, I would have liked to have seen something more akin to a raita to complement the spices in the patty.

At £2.99 and clocking in at just 400 calories, this is both respectable for your wallet and waistline. At the McDonald’s we visited, it cost £4.79 as a medium or £5.19 as a large meal.

I’m guessing the patty used on this and the Spicy version is being removed from the menu because it will be more cost effective to have two veggie goujons instead while also having the flexibility of them being used in the wrap too (see Chicken Selects).

Either way it is a shame and I’m glad to have at least tried it for my first and last time.

The Vegetable Deluxe is approved by the Vegetarian Society and it’s now approved by BURGER LAD®.

In before the lock.
