Patty and Bun knows it is popular. And everybody else seems to know as well. Doors open at 12 and from 20 minutes before, there’s a significant queue.

Inside, there’s probably space for 20-30 people and eating, knowing there’s still a queue outside, there’s a degree of unspoken pressure to finish up and go.

The menu at Patty & Bun…

This sort of thing – no booking, queuing at the door, is not my cup of tea.

So, I’m only here because the burgers are so good and today it is the Ari Gold, Joe’s signature burger and probably the most famous on the menu.

It’s a cheeseburger with all the trimmings and bacon is an extra 50p. Question: what isn’t made better with bacon? Answer: nothing, so the Admiral will be having his Ari Gold with bacon.

Chips with Rosemary Salt = £2.75…

The chips, seasoned with rosemary salt, are amongst the best in the business, so these are on my order too.

At 12, the waiting horde is invited in. The location is just off Oxford Street, but the queue seems to consist of local workers rather than tourists.

Basic layout, chipboard walls and loud (and probably unnecessary) music.

Inside the P&B wrapping…

Order taken pretty much right away. “Is medium-rare ok?”, she asked. “Yes, but medium would be slightly better”, I answered.

Quite sure my order is the first in, and the queue is swallowed up by the tables – only three remain though, and it’s 12:03.

My burger arrives soon. The first bite is always what defines opinion most and here it is wonderful. There’s a lot of toppings competing for attention here but it is testament to the quality of the meat that that is what steals the show.

Patty & Bun ‘ARI GOLD’ Cheeseburger…

It really is incredibly tasty. Inspecting it more closely, the tiny specks of fat can be seen. The ratio is spot on – outstanding.

Texture-wise, the bun is sturdy – it has to be to hold this together. The ketchup and mayo and meat juices are squirting and you definitely need napkins for this.

In fact, I think the sign of a top burger is a degree of mess squirting out the back when you take the first couple of bites. This one is no exception.

Lifting the lid at P&B…

There’s crunch in the underlay and this comes courtesy of the pickled onions. It’s a great counterbalance to all the sloppiness in the attic.

Special mention must be made of the chips. They are incredible. I defy anyone to stop eating them once they’ve started.

The meat is absolutely great, and its juices work in absolute harmony with the choice of toppings (and the added bacon) to create a fantastic taste.

It takes a fantastic burger to draw my attention away from these chips and thankfully Ari Gold fits that bill.

A fantastic burger…

Joe and his team have clearly put some considerable time into the development of the burgers here. The combination of ingredients feels like it has been carefully thought out to give the best sensations of taste and texture.

And the size is just right. No gimmicks, just a terrific burger.

Chips are pretty special too…
