McDonald’s Spicy Veggie One

McDonald’s Spicy Veggie One Review

McDonald’s Spicy Veggie One:

What they say:

Say no to boring lunches this lunchtime with the all new Spicy Veggie One. Made with red pesto veggie goujons with spicy relish, tomato, lettuce and red onion in a soft, toasted tortilla wrap.

Price: £1.99 on Wrap of the Day.

Calories: 364 kcal.

I know I said I was going to pass on the Spicy Veggie One but I thought I would give it a chance – it couldn’t be much worse than the new Vegetable Deluxe. And I was correct…

Spicy Veggie One - McDonald's

Wraps are not very photogenic, so let’s take a look at the vivid packaging which is exclusively for the Spicy Veggie Wrap.

The green is there to distinguish it from the other Big Flavour Wraps. Although there is already a reported problem…

“Shocked mum slams McDonald’s after finding chicken in son’s veggie Happy Meal.”

Alright, that’s the Happy Meal version, but as we alluded to in our Chicken Big Tasty review, the ongoing sensationalism from the gutter press is amusing. Take with the left arm, stab in the back with the right.

Part of me was hoping that I might end up with two Chicken Selects today instead of “those goujons.”

Anyway… back to making my lunch epic.

Spicy Veggie One - McDonald's

I had reservations about sampling the Spicy Veggie One as I really was not impressed with the flavours of the Vegetable Deluxe.

I’m actually pleased to report back that the wrap is an improvement. But only just…

The improvement is solely down to the spicy relish – it is a tomato-based sauce with hints of pepper and possibly chilli to give it the slightest (and I mean slightest) tickle to your taste buds.

I instantly thought of salsa when I had it.

Spicy Veggie One

The trouble is, that this is the defining feature of the Spicy Veggie One NOT the goujons. And that is the issue.

At £1.99 on a Monday, it is certainly good value, especially if you are restricted to the limited options for vegetarians (still) on the McDonald’s menu. And I’m not counting donuts, cookies and muffins. Oh my.

And at only 364 kcal this must be one of the lowest calorie (substantial) menu items. Which is a positive…

If you are a meat-eater and looking for a two quid lunch, I’d fail to see why you would opt for this over say the Bacon Double Cheeseburger. Or the £1.99 Big Mac and Fries hack – why does everything have to be a lifestyle hack now!?

Spicy Veggie One

The goujons this time are masked by the spicy relish… their hints of tomato backed up by a huge slice of (visually attractive) fresh tomato – which after a few bites was removed. Not for me.

I like the addition of red onion with its semi-sharp tang now and then.

The combination of the veggie goujons, spicy relish and red onion (in the tortilla), IMO work better than the components of the new and improved Vegetable Deluxe.

Spicy Veggie One

There’s only so many photos you can take of a wrap so we’ll “wrap” up our review of the Spicy Veggie One now.

Sauce – good
Tomato – down to personal preference
Red onion – good
Veggie goujons – masked by the relish which is not a positive
Price/calories – great on a Monday for your pocket

Overall, certainly better than the burger which I tried the other day, but I can’t ever see me having the Spicy Veggie One again.

I also don’t understand why McDonald’s discontinued the Spicy Vegetable Deluxe when they could have just used the spicy relish from this on that instead.

If you’re a vegetarian or someone looking for a respite from meat, I would direct you to this ahead of the Vegetable Deluxe every day of the week. Especially on a Monday.

Epic lunch? Only after my Double Cheese Chaser…

Personally preferred the spicy version but I reckon you could ask them to put the spicy relish they use in the veggie wrap on it and that would make it very good…

The veggie wrap is very nice but if you can’t exist without dead animal in a bun or wrap then its not for you.
