Review of McDonald’s Red Leicester Melts

Starting from Wednesday 28th June, and running alongside the ever popular Big Tasty, will be a brand new side at McDonald’s – Red Leicester Melts.

In the past, we have had a plethora of cheese sides from the Golden Arches (the most recent innovation being the Spicy Nacho Cheese Wedges) but using Red Leicester cheese is a first for McDonald’s.

Available in a portion of five and served with a Rich Tomato Dip, the new Red Leicester Melts are on-sale at participating restaurants until Tuesday 15th August.

Priced at a reasonable £1.59, these offer good value and are primarily designed to supplement your meal.

And they are pretty good!

The melts come in a brown paper bag and are quite small – don’t go into McDonald’s expecting big cheese sides. These are very much the same sort of size as previously released Cheese Bites/Melts/Wedges.

I’m not the biggest cheese eater but the Red Leicester certainly looks impressive with its reddish-orange colour. In fact, I’d say visually, these looked more vibrant than their promotional imagery.

They’re quite distinct in flavour – certainly more cheesy than the cheddar or mozzarella offerings and I think I would get them again.

You’ve got a slightly crispy/crunchy coating which makes way for an oozing cheese core. It’s a tried and tested combination for a McDonald’s cheese side.

My main love for the Red Leicester Melts is that Rich Tomato Dip though – amazing!

It’s not a new sauce and has accompanied a number of cheese sides in the past. It’s got a fresh tomato taste with a great Italian herb seasoning blend. For me, it feels more upmarket than other McDonald’s sauces.

To put it simply, it is the ideal marinara dipping sauce for your melts. Love it!

If you’re looking to add to your meal with a cheese side (at the moment I keep getting a Big Mac and fries for £1.99 via Food for Thought’s) this is the perfect accompaniment.

The Red Leicester Melts are not huge but as a portion of five for £1.59 they’re very respectfully priced and the cheese is definitely more flavoursome than previous cheese side LTOs.

And THAT sauce makes them – just make sure they don’t forget to give it to you!
