Quarter Pounder with Cheese

McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with Cheese Review

Quarter Pounder with Cheese:

What they say:

A quarter-pound patty of 100% beef, with two slices of cheese, onions, pickles, mustard and a dollop of tomato ketchup in a sesame seed bun. Irresistible.

Price: £3.39/£4.79/£5.19.

Calories: 518 kcal.

You might not believe it, but this is only the second time in my life that I have had a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with Cheese.

That is not counting the previously reviewed (and long discontinued) Quarter Pounder Deluxe – see here.

Long-time readers of BURGER LAD® should remember my aversion to all things ketchup/mustard/mayo and any sauce I didn’t like the look of.

“Call yourself a burger reviewer Burger Lad®”

Exactly.

So, when I started my mission to bring you the UK’s number one burger review website, I quickly adopted the “all the ingredients or it doesn’t count” approach.

Prior to this outlook, my go-to order was always multiple plain cheeseburgers. This developed into plain double cheeseburgers as I got older and my waistline expanded.

It was approximately twenty years ago I decided to sample a plain QP via the Drive-Thru.

From vague memory… I was sat in my car, took a bite into the Quarter Pounder with Cheese and fat/oil squirted straight out the back of it – instantly ruining a decent shirt.

I’ve never forgotten that.

Two decades later, I am re-visiting a McDonald’s menu mainstay and a favourite of both Miss Milkshake and Captain QP.

Captain QP recommends adding shredded lettuce, but today I am reviewing the burger with no tweaks – sauce ‘n all.

After a short wait, my lone QP arrived via table service after successfully ordering this time via the MyMcDonald’s app.

First thing I noticed is that the onions are chopped differently on here compared to on a Cheeseburger and/or Big Mac – whoever knew!?

The size of the patty is blatantly too big for the bun but that sort of makes it more appealing if that makes sense?

Biting in you get what Miss Milkshake has always called “the true taste of McDonald’s” (and when I say “McDonald’s” in my mind I can hear Michael Keaton shouting it in the movie The Founder).

The patty is fairly dry on this one (no grease on the shirt this time!) but it is not too overly obscene.

I find myself enjoying the Quarter Pounder. It’s almost a strange sensation. This has got ketchup on it. I shouldn’t like it but I do.

Ketchup (for me) is still something I struggle to enjoy and I battle through that thought in the back of my mind.

I’m picking up the sharp tang of the fresh onion, a crunchy bite from the pickles and that classic combination of beef and cheese with just a slight sweetness from the ketchup.

It’s alright. I’m seeing why people like it – especially the onion factor.

If there is mustard on this build there is so little of it because it is nigh on impossible to even detect. I don’t know… I’m convinced there isn’t. Should I take it back?

“Excuse me you forget my mustard on this QP”

Nah. Won’t bother. I think there is a bit. Maybe.

It’s a classic. I wouldn’t quite label it irresistible, but I can assure you it won’t be another 20 years before I have my next one.

I would love to try a double version of this or next time maybe I will go with the recommendation of adding shredded lettuce. We shall see…

For now though, the QP is a thumbs up from me and I really cannot believe how few of these I have had in my lifetime.

I paid £3.39 but you can expect to pay anything up-to 30p less depending on the location you visit.

Overall, the Quarter Pounder with Cheese is a classic burger that combines all the warm familiarity of McDonald’s into a sesame seed bun.

The fresh onion compliments the beef and cheese to a tee, but I’m still unsure just how much mustard made its way on to this build today.
