We broke the news of the Great Tastes of America promotion coming back to the UK on Tuesday 2nd April and here we are on day two of week five. Burger Lad® was there to sample this fifth and final limited time offering.

When I think of New York the following springs to mind; iconic buildings, shopping, yellow taxi cabs, Central Park and hot dogs. So what entitles this burger to be branded a New York Classic? Is it the choice of sauces or the red onion rings and bacon?

Call me what you want but it takes a very brave man to face his demons. And the demons on offer today are my most feared condiments. Mayo (OK conquered that one), mustard… and ketchup! Anyone that knows me will tell you I despise tomato ketchup.

I was joined on this latest jaunt to McDonald’s by one half of the ‘Kondiment Kids’ – unfortunately her video camera work is not up to scratch so I had to do this myself so apologies now.

We arrived at 10:30am for the New York Classic and the menu boards were literally just being changed from breakfast to lunch. I placed our order and the Duty Manager overheard and quite abruptly told me it would be a ten minute wait. My eyes narrowed… “That will be fine… I will wait.” I replied.

But I was happy. I would be sampling the first off the production line on day two of this, the last of the Great Tastes of America and what a five weeks we’ve enjoyed. The burger arrived (not in its promotional carton) and I got to work photo shooting this latest model.

As you can see it was pretty impressive looking, I would say probably the best presentation of any of the five limited time offers I have encountered recently. It was hot, freshly cooked and because it wasn’t busy in the restaurant this had been lovingly put together. To my pleasure there was no “burger slide” and I took my first bite.

The first taste of the New York Classic is the crunchy, sharp red onion and it was a nice mouthful. Of course I had some fear of the concoction of ketchup, mustard and mayo but all mixed together they made for a pleasant blend. The bacon was a nice slice and it was like it had just flipped itself off the pan and onto my patty.

The patty was seasoned and was probably the best I’ve had of these promotional items. Looks like coming in at 10:30am pays off as you get everything cooked “fresh”. The lettuce was good looking and not dull and overall there was a salty taste of the bacon mixed with sauces and onion that prevailed.

This is something I would have always passed on due to the sauces on board but the combination of my three biggest enemies melded quite well together. This, I thought must make it a classic.

I loved how the American Cheese looked today. On the outside it was still cold and folded slightly over the bacon but inside it had melted against the patty and sauces to give a cheesy, mayo mixture. The raw, red onion rings were thickly cut and they gave you a heavy handed reminder of their presence throughout this burger. You can see out latest episode of Burger Lad TV here:

This last Great Tastes of America was better than expected. If I was to rank them I would probably go:

1. Arizona Nacho Grande
2. New York Classic
3. Louisiana BBQ
4. Chicago Supreme
5. California Melt

Please feel free to leave a comment if you agree or disagree! The New York Classic just shaded the Louisiana and that just beat the Chicago because of the novelty of BBQ sauce on a UK McDonald’s burger.

We now cast our “burger goggles” onto the next promotional items coming from Ronald and friends. My money is on any of the following:

Free Coca Cola Glasses.

Big Tasty (although expect that later in the year).

Possibly Great Tastes of the World. Sweden currently have an excellent line-up.

Definitely not ‘Mein Burger’ which has featured across Europe as I was told exclusively this was not coming to the UK.

With that let us reflect on our last stop on this tour of the U.S and the New York Classic…

We’ll be back again soon. Thanks everyone for reading.
