McDonald’s Mississippi Stack

Mississippi Stack

McDonald’s Mississippi Stack Review

Mississippi Stack:

What they say:

Two 100% British and Irish beef burgers with bacon, mild cheddar, tomato and onion relish, rich and sticky BBQ sauce, red onion and lettuce in a toasted ciabatta.

Price: £4.69/£5.89/£6.29 (subject to variation).

Calories: 654 kcal.

Great Tastes of America continues at McDonald’s and available in weeks three and four is the brand new Mississippi Stack.

Brand. Spanking. New.

McDonald’s are certainly going in the right direction with their recycling policy.

You can now put plastic and paper in separate bins in their restaurants and recently they have removed plastic straws and replaced them with paper alternatives.

It’s good for the environment and their image/reputation.

Looking at The Mississippi Stack it seems they have stepped up their recycling efforts even more with this build.

Anyone remember the BBQ Smokehouse (later renamed The Original BBQ Smokehouse)?

We do…

Looking past the obvious, that this is a double patty burger and that was a single, they remarkably share many characteristics.

Bacon
Cheese
Tomato & Onion Relish
BBQ Sauce
Red Onion
Ciabatta

Pretty similar if you ask me…

Today, (the first day it is available) I was in McDonald’s at approximately 11am.

I went to the touchscreens to order and dun-dun-dun… it was unavailable. A great big fat red cross running through it on the digital display.

Approaching the counter, a girl came to take my order.

“Can I have the Mississippi Stack please? Just the burger.”

– Is that as a meal?

“Just the burger thanks.”

The girl looked at the cash register with slight confusion.

– It’s not on yet. It is still the New York Stack.

Huge Mississippi Stack imagery adorned the electronic menu board behind her. A poster in the window as I walked in displayed the GTA week 3 and week 4 promo…

“It most certainly is. It starts today!”

After a quick check with a colleague (the old burger needs to be de-activated on the till and the new one activated) I was back in business…

My burger was extremely messy. It really did look untidy and I am struggling to defend it.

There is WAY too much lettuce on here. Too much! It’s a scruffy looking build in an almost deserted restaurant. Frustrating – there is no excuse for it today.

At least it was built to spec.

In the first bite I got a lot of the BBQ sauce which was predominantly on one side of the heel of the bun – an issue I had with the Alabama Chicken.

I actually typed in my notes that it “is quite rich in flavour with plenty of depth” before reading the official description.

The sauce is certainly decent enough if you’re a fan of BBQ sauce and it’s smooth, smoky tones.

There’s no denying it is sticky too. It could be the one that was on the BBQ Smokehouse, but that was a few years ago now…

Next on your palate is the semi-sharp red onion with its signature crispiness in taste and texture.

It’s not too harsh and melds with the barbecue admirably. The trouble here is that this combination is something we have seen over and over and over again.

Both the onion and sauce are the lingering flavours in your mouth long after you have eaten the Mississippi Stack.

Speaking of sauces – that tomato and onion relish is nigh on impossible to detect when munching your way through the Mississippi.

It’s sweet, very faint and in all honesty, I wouldn’t have known if it was on here or not had I not lifted the lid.

The cheese… the bacon “blah blah blah” – if you feel like you are going through the motions reading this review then this is exactly what it was like to a) eat it and b) review it.

I apologise for this…

OK, so the cheese (this has “mild” cheddar compared to the BBQ Smokehouse’s “mature” cheddar – you won’t tell the difference) is slightly different to that on the normal menu but what have we got?

A bacon double cheeseburger with red onion and barbecue sauce.

I’ve not mentioned the bun yet. This is alright, but IMO not as good as the bun used on the Alabama Chicken.

Overall, The Mississippi Stack is pretty boring and I can’t help but think that is reflected in this review – I can only analyse what is in front of me.

The main points are the smokehouse BBQ sauce (description used we have in one leaked image) and the red onion.

Lovers of the Great Tastes of America double stack burgers that enjoy the barbecue variations might be a fan.

McDonald’s use 2 x 6:1 beef patties (six patties in a pound) for GTA and for a comparison of the patty sizes available excl. Signature, see below.

For me, this should have been an easy pass and it really is nothing more than a double version of the previously released BBQ Smokehouse.

You may have heard of the saying “always a pleasure, never a chore” but the whole experience, from ordering to publishing this review was definitely more a chore than pleasure.

Bored reading…!? I was yawning typing it.

The Mississippi Stack is available, subject to availability (and the tills) at all participating restaurants from Wednesday 15th May until Tuesday 28th May.
