McDonald’s Mac Jr.

McDonald's Mac Jr.

McDonald’s Mac Jr.

Mac Jr.:

What they say:

Smaller than a Big Mac®, but still packs a pickle. One beef patty, a slice of cheese, and that iconic sauce.

Price: £2.49.

Calories: 400 kcal.

McDonald’s is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac by bringing the Grand Big Mac and Mac Jr. to its UK restaurants for a limited time.

If you are looking for a review of the Grand Big Mac (priced at £4.29) then click here.

Today we are going to focus on the smallest burger in this LTO – the Mac Jr.

I would wager that at least 90% of our loyal readers have tried more than one Big Mac in their lifetime, so we don’t need to go into that much detail on the flavours going on here.

This burger is basically that minus the middle ‘Club Layer’ bun and one of the beef patties.

Priced at a reasonable £2.49 and clocking in at a respectable 400 calories, this is certainly a good option for those looking for a lighter meal.

Of course, those complaining about the size of the Big Mac (£3.19) getting smaller over the years can turn their attention to the Grand Big Mac.

Being a Junior, this isn’t allowed its own special box but does get its own packaging which is the same style you’d get for a regular burger off the Saver Menu. But without the Saver Menu price.

Biting in you get that familiarity of the Special Sauce alongside the pickles, lettuce and onion. It’s exactly what it sets out to be – a smaller version of the flagship burger.

I can’t help think it is there to appease those who might look at the GBM and say “McDonald’s is trying to fatten us up with this bigger burger” i.e. their counter would be “well look… we have a smaller option too killjoy”.

It is a decent option for those looking for the iconic taste of the Big Mac but in a smaller format. It also feels less “bready” by not having the middle bun.

It’s obviously far less desirable than its Grand counterpart and as you can see from the comparison shots below looks dwarfed by its bigger cousin.

Would I have it again? I very much doubt it.

As you may have seen on Twitter, I’m a big fan of McDonald’s Food For Thought initiative – keep your receipt, fill in a short survey, validate your code and next time you’ve got a Big Mac and Fries for £1.99.

For me, that beats either this or the Grand version.

Both are with us until Tuesday March 20th so whatever sized burger you opt for, go and enjoy it!
