McDonald’s UK have launched a new wrap – The Hot Cajun Chicken One, which is available in grilled or crispy versions.

Exactly a year to the day that the Peri Wrap was discontinued (still sobbing), its Buffalo successor has suffered the same fate.

It’s no major surprise they have got rid of it.

Make no mistake, I love spicy food, but I personally found the Buffalo One a little excessive with the heat levels… to the detriment of the other ingredients.

I doubt McDonald’s would discontinue a menu item that sells well, so it looks like the people of the UK have spoken.

It was also only a matter of time that once all restaurants were converted to EOTF and had the Signature Collection, that a permanent (for now) menu item would feature jalapeños.

And here we are…

The Hot Cajun Chicken One has all the potential to be a real winner and fill the void that has been missing since the Peri Wrap disappeared from our high street and retail parks.

When we first heard of a new “Cajun wrap”, I had wondered if this would be similar to the previously released Cajun Crispy Chicken Sandwich – our review here.

That had roasted peppers and I highly doubted these would make a reappearance.

It was a lock the Hot Cajun Chicken One would have ingredients that are cross-utilised in other burgers or wraps i.e. lettuce, onion and/or tomato.

Wraps are not very photogenic and my lunch today was no exception. It also wasn’t the best constructed wrap I’ve had at McDonald’s.

One Select was hanging on for dear life to avoid spilling out the “top” and the sauce had also congregated at the “bottom”.

I unravelled the Hot Cajun Chicken One to take a look what was inside…

IMO the Chicken Selects work better in a wrap than in a burger.

These are joined by one solitary Pepper Jack cheese slice, one slice of tomato and this had either five or six small jalapeño slices.

The sauce is fantastic – I believe it is mayo-based.

I can neither confirm nor deny if it was the same as the Cajun Crispy Chicken Sandwich (too long ago). What you do get is a flavoursome signature Cajun spice you’d associate with creole cooking.

It is slightly spicy. Not as hot as the Peri and nowhere near as fiery as the (sometimes) unpleasant Buffalo One.

The Hot Cajun Crispy Chicken One is an enjoying bite throughout with a slight kick… but don’t rush to McDonald’s expecting scorching. That ship has sailed.

I’d have this again on a Friday no doubts, but today I visited a more premium-priced location and wept when I paid £3.09.

My only grumble with the taste and flavour (as expected) is the fresh tomato.

I’m sure many people like it, but for me it is too distinct and overbearing to the other ingredients.

If I could swap it out for onion I would probably be able to move on from my love affair with the Peri One.

But there doesn’t appear to be any customisation options (on the app/touchscreen) with the Big Flavour Wraps (apart from excluding stuff).

Lunchtimes just got a whole lot hotter? Well actually no… no they didn’t as the Fiery thing has gone.

What we have got is a respectable wrap with a decent sauce and jalapeños plus the usual salad suspects and the ever present Chicken Selects.

If the Peri One took Gold on the podium, I would have to place this 2nd with Silver and the Fiery Buffalo with Bronze.
