McDonald’s Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese

McDonald’s Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese Review

McDonald’s Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese:

What they say:

We’re taking this classic and doubling it. Two irresistible 100% beef patties. Two slices of cheese. Topped with fresh onions, pickles and lashings of sauce.

Price: £4.59/£6.19/£6.59.

Calories: 750 kcal.

Finally. The Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese has come back to McDonald’s…

But why is it not called a Half Pounder with Cheese?

Are you one of the people asking this?

Are you on social media asking this stupid question with some sort of pondering emoji thinking you are the only person that ever had this original thought!?

Like some sort of anarchist challenging the establishment.

I can only assume that whenever the first Double Quarter Pounder was invented that the usage of two QP patties would result in it being named just that – a Double Quarter Pounder.

Maybe it is just me, but a Half Pounder would suggest that it is one sole beef patty.

Anyway.

The timeless classic that is the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese is back at McDonald’s for seven weeks only starting on Wednesday 7th August 2019.

This is the first time it has been on a UK menu (yes we know you can get it in other countries) in over a decade… before the movie Super Size Me scared it away from these shores.

Smart McDonald’s fans will obviously have known about its impending release since we started posting that it was to make a return before Great Tastes of the World launches in September.

Long-term readers of BURGER LAD® will know I have a somewhat strange aversion to ketchup (and not overly fond of mustard) but without a shadow of a doubt, this is one of THE BEST burgers I have ever had at McDonald’s.

It looks the part. And you know you are in for a treat when you pick the box up. It feels heavy – I’d probably estimate it somewhere in the region of a half-pound in weight maybe?

My build today looks great and I’m actually excited with the anticipation of biting in – there are going to be countless McDonald’s enthusiasts across the country crying with joy when they get to sample this beast.

And it’s not too beastly when it comes to calories too – only 750 kcal compared to the Big Tasty with Bacon which clocks in at 890 kcal.

OK, the two beef patties (not one half pound patty) do slightly stick out of the “a bit too small” sesame seed bun – but that’s part of the illusion – to make those double patties look BIG.

What can you really say about the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese that you don’t already know?

You’ve got the “true taste” of McDonald’s with that classic ensemble of beef, cheese, ketchup, onion, pickles and mustard which provides all the warmth and familiarity in a burger you will ever need.

But once again… where is the mustard!?

Lifting the lid, I cannot visually see it and we have noticed on more than one occasion that McDonald’s staff are simply leaving it off.

Why is this!?

Is there some sort of mustard levy we need to pay to get the stuff which should be on there!?

I’m not taking it back. Maybe it is on there under the cheese? Either way, it is so faint I can barely detect it.

With each QP or Double Cheese (with all the ingredients on) the more I move away from my disliking of ketchup and today I am in the zone enjoying my Double.

It is really, really satisfying with every mouthful and no doubt I will be getting amongst this one again. The classic taste of McDonald’s – doubled!

The 12+ years it has been taken away from us has been worth the wait. And if it sells well (which it must do) you can bet it will feature on the menu again in the future (with bacon perhaps?).

Speaking of bacon – you can add it for an additional 40p via the MyMcDonald’s app or Touch Screen Kiosk. I know what I will be doing next time…

Since the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese (and the aforementioned movie) was last on-sale in the UK we have slowly seen double burgers (excluding Double Cheese/Big Mac) sneaking back on the menu.

We saw it first with The Grand and this continued with the double stacks for Great Tastes of America and Great Tastes of the World.

With the Double QP back is there hope that one day the Mega Mac (aka Double Big Mac) could return?

At 680 calories (according to the Canadian website) it is not beyond the realms of possibility. We shall see…

In the meantime, go out and bask in the glory that is the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese – a timeless classic which provides a satisfying meaty goodness in each bite.

For the taste scoring it would have scored 90 or even 95 below had it definitely had mustard on it – I’m still not 100% sure.

The Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese will be at participating restaurants subject to availability until Tuesday 24th September.
