The quest for the Double Big Mac is finally over.

From Wednesday 18th November, the four beef patty version of the flagship burger will be available at McDonald’s until Tuesday 29th December as part of the 2020 Festive Menu.

Our quest for the Double Big Mac started 8 years ago on a fledgling BURGER LAD® website, but it hasn’t appeared on the UK menu for much longer than that.

McDonald's Festive Menu

In the distant past, the Mega Mac has been on-sale in this country and it also features permanently or promotionally on menus in other regions across the globe.

McDonald’s tell us fans that the Double Big Mac and Mega Mac are two different entities and that it is the first time the Double has been on-sale in the UK.

I personally can’t see the difference – could someone at “MacDonalds” let us know please?

Writing this review, I feel a sense of nostalgia thinking back to when The Fellowship of the Double embarked on their journey to find the Double Big Mac.

The landscape of fast food has changed dramatically in those 8 years – just some that spring to mind include kiosk and app ordering, McDelivery et al and even operationally… so that all food is made to order instead of sitting in those old heating bays. Remember those?

Another aspect that has altered in those 8 years is the promotion and reporting of what is coming next at McDonald’s.

I assure you. When I first started this website, you didn’t know what new burger was going to be available at McDonald’s until the day of release. And media and other lifestyle outlets rarely reported on the next LTO.

If you don’t believe me, just “Google” Great Tastes of America 2013 or 2012 or before and compare that to nowadays.

Very few websites were interested in the new promotion(s) at The Golden Arches and trying to find out limited time burgers prior to 2012 is nigh impossible.

This very website changed that game.

Of course, I didn’t realise this (or even set out to), when we first asked a crew member if they could make us up a Double Big Mac… like the one on the McDonald’s Canada website.

It’s also been a slow journey to the Double Big Mac “returning” to the UK after the fast food fallout of the Supersize Movie.

Ignoring the Double Cheeseburger, doubles or triples seemed to be a thing of the past.

The resurgence started by McDonald’s testing the waters with The Grand – anyone remember that one? Our review here.

Since that “test”, we’ve seen double stacks on Great Tastes of America/The World, the Bacon Clubhouse Double, Grand Big Mac and more recently, the Double Quarter Pounder and Triple Cheeseburger (both now permanent additions to the menu).

And here we are, finally. The Double Big Mac. Available to order in all its glory without the need of a “menu hack” to create your own…

As with the majority of burgers at McDonald’s now, you can customise the DBM and these include adding the following; Bacon (40p/80p), Cheese (20p), Ketchup, Mayonnaise, Mustard (all free) and/or Tomato (20p/40p).

I was back at the Drive Thru at the restaurant where the infamous quest began all those years ago – I’d placed my order via the My McDonald’s App which is a slick process and my preferred method of choice.

Handing me my brown paper bag, I drove off in search of a parking space noticing other McDonald’s fans sat in their cars chomping away. I wasn’t sure whether to flash my lights at them or some other code…

As you can see from the pictures, this looks well put together for a fast food burger costing under five pounds. It might look like there were only three patties on here but I checked four times. There were four!

At my local, a Big Mac is £3.19 for the burger only, so for the extra £1.10 it is certainly worth the upgrade. And yes, I’m sure there will be those out there asking for two Double Cheeseburgers to be dressed like a Big Mac instead so you carry on…

Double Big Mac UK 2020

Is it the biggest burger ever at McDonald’s? I’m not sure…

We’re told it is. But four 10:1 beef patties vs. two 4:1 beef patties would suggest you get “more beef” on a Double Quarter Pounder. I’ll go with the flow and trust the marketing spiel.

You will need snake jaws for this as in terms of height, this is a big burger. The biggest maybe? Nearly as big as the Monster Mac I tried a long time ago!

You’re going to make a mess eating this too, with lettuce flying out of the build from all angles. I’ve almost forgotten/missed what it was like to be eating in the car!

There’s plenty of beef on the Double Big Mac and you get the Big Mac Sauce… obviously – I was lucky as there seemed to be plenty on here and it could suffer from extreme dryness if the staff are a bit shy with the Special Sauce canister.

A word of caution for those looking at that all important beef to cheese ratio. One slice is not enough so I advise paying the extra 20p to add an additional slice.

I am wondering if the Mega Mac had two cheese slices by default and perhaps that is the difference.

However you have this, fans of the Big Mac are sure to rejoice this Christmas with the bigger Double Big Mac – really, what is there not to like?

Four beef patties (two one side of the middle bun and two the other side), lettuce, onions, pickles and Special Sauce and it is all good.

OK, not very festive. But this has been a turbulent year and I’m just happy that a) McDonald’s is open for us (a big thank you to all the crew members!) and b) that the UK finally gets to be able to order and sample this burger!

It’s the perfect time (of year) to add this to the menu – it’s been a shit year and Christmas is the time to indulge.

The introduction of the DBM is further proof that McDonald’s have moved away from specials featuring nacho chips, chorizo, mixed peppers, guacamole etc. and instead, doubling up of our favourites.

Those of you who have always followed our social media accounts and seen some of the menu items around the world will probably be disappointed.

However, Worldwide Favourites (which was postponed due to Coronavirus) could offer some hope and is a potential LTO for 2021 depending on the state of the country.

What else could next year bring?

McDonald’s fans have always clamoured for extra beef on their burgers. We’ve had the Double Quarter Pounder, Triple Cheeseburger and now Double Big Mac.

Could 2021 be the year for the Double Big Tasty which is on-sale as a promo item in other counties?

We were once told (off record) that they would never want to go over the calorie count of a Big Tasty with Bacon but has that stance now changed?

Interestingly, news from our “Secret Sauce” has just come in – that Katsu Chicken McNuggets will be on the menu for a limited time in January, so watch this space… those and the return of the Big Tasty (not a double) is the latest rumour.

In the meantime, we’ll leave you with one last look at the Double Big Mac.

The quest is FINALLY over.

Doesn’t look anything like the promo picture, and it needs more cheese.

Menu items like this should be on offer year-round as there are not any new ingredients required to make them. They could be offered either as a separate menu item or in the customisation options.

The only reason I can see to limit them would be to avoid them competing with proper time-limited promotional menu items if they ever return.

I think this is just lazy from McDonald’s. Their festive burgers used to be a good and were different to the main menu. This is just a Big Mac with two extra patties that you can’t eat without wearing it. No thank you.

This is one of the worst McDonald’s promo burgers in a long time, and joke of a Festive option.

The fact that it comes with just *one* cheese slice in the build goes to show how lazy this concept is. The additional slice would have held the burger together better, and I begrudge paying 20 more for something that could have been there in the first place.

You’d be better off buying two Big Macs with a £1.99 voucher and combining the two – at least then you’d get the extra cheese.

I’m a bit disappointed that the tone of this article seems more positive than KFC’s Xmas option, as at least they *tried* to do something a bit different.

Sort yourselves out McDonalds – we are sick of the boring promos, and there’s only so long you can ‘flog a dead Chicken Select’ before your output becomes completely predictable and, as a result, uninteresting.

I like the idea, it’s a lot like the burgers people are custom ordering anyway. The cheese obviously needs doubling at least, but can we trust the staff to distribute the extra slice properly, hopefully on the top half and not both on the bottom bun? Ketchup and mustard would be my other additions.

It can’t possibly be the ‘bigget ever burger’ in terms of weight, four 10:1 patties is roughly 181 grams, two 4:1 patties comes out at 226 grams! They can only mean ‘biggest’ as in height, but cleverly wording it in such a way as to fool us into thinking it’s better value than the Double Quarter Pounder!

Not a Double Big Mac, I would call this a Double Burger Big Mac, the reference to Double should be twice on all fillings, not just meat !! shame, small box says it all !!!

Burger Lad is an awesome website.
I am in the US. McDonalds is one step above a free store dumpster. The double big mac here comes with a FREE MASH Down. They mash it down to a puck and box it.

The best burger here is The Double Bacon King at Burger King. 2 1/4 pound patties, 6 pieces of bacon 4 slices of cheese and their version of Mac Sauce.

About half way thru the sandwich you realize what a pig you really are… LOL

Over at Mc Clowns you get half way thru and realize… wow I am eating something from the dumpster.
