McDonalds Double Big Mac UK

McDonald’s Double Big Mac UK

On a recent online worldwide burger tour I stumbled across the McDonald’s Canada website and found something that was quite intriguing… The Double Big Mac.

Now I believe this has been on sale in the UK before as the Mega Mac but I never sampled it at the time. It has not made an appearance since…

I have also recently been reading up on ‘Secret Menu Items’ (SMI).

This started with the creatively named ‘McGangBang’ which led me to other great sounding SMI called the Land, Sea and Air Burger, Big McChicken, Monster Mac and the McKinley Mac. The McKinley Mac is actually available in Alaska and is made from 2 x quarter pound patties and is also known as the Bigger Big Mac (for bigger boys).

Check out our extensive secret menu item catalogue here.

Anyway this got me thinking… would a UK based McDonald’s let me order a Double Big Mac and confirm the existence of this secret sect?

Somebody had the ingenious idea that we would film this ‘indecent proposal’ so a six strong firm of us headed to the nearest McDonald’s. I had a print out of this monster burger from the Canadian website and the quest was about to begin.

The ‘fellowship of the double’ entered and to be honest I think we all felt a bit nervous.

Anxiety was etched across a number of our faces as we prepared to enter the unknown.

We identified a member of staff with four stars (which reflect their progress through the McDonald’s internal training scheme). And within a minute this unsuspecting individual was ready to take a new (world) order.

I was up. My lead cameraman was ready so with one deep breath I took the plunge.

I directed the print-off towards him and asked if I could have one of them. He looked over the print-off and ever so politely said he would need to check.

It seemed like an eternity passed as we stood there waiting. A number of different staff looked at the beast on the page before deciding that on this occasion we were to be unsuccessful in our quest. So… had we debunked the myth of the SMI?

Fortunately, we had a plan B (for burger) so I simply ordered a medium Big Mac meal and an additional plain double cheeseburger.

I thanked the individual that served me for being a good sport and off I went with my tray of food.

We joked that perhaps I would have been refused the double cheese as they knew our cunning plan to create this unholy alliance. I also thought that if I had offended the staff in any way they would exact their revenge in my burgers – I soon disregarded this notion.

In my mind, I had envisaged this scenario and was going to take a picture of both the two components. But in the heat of the moment forgot and started constructing this meat terror only to realise I had created a SMI. The Grilled Cheese which features on a number of online lists showing SMI in the United States. I apologise for no photographs of this item but we’re here for one thing. That Double Big Mac.

How would I describe the Double Big Mac? Good. You get that instant hit of the classic Big Mac sauce. But the two additional beef patties really make this a mouth full. But what a rush…?

The burger was really meaty and all held together well. Some of the cheese from the double had made its way across and was a welcome addition. I could taste the lettuce and gherkins throughout the Double Big Mac and it was one of those burgers you should probably only ever have once in your life.

I fought my way through this beast of a burger which was a meaty opponent on our quest for secret menu items. As you can see from the pictures the retail Big Mac had been lovingly put together and with the greatest respect I managed to insert the two additional patties.

We have a world premiere of the quest which can be seen below:

‘Double’ thanks to the efforts of everyone to get this available so soon.

If you feel brave (to either order or try the Double Big Mac) then I recommend it but only for rare occasions cause you’ll know you’ve had a big burger! As for SMI the quest will be a never-ending story.

2014 update:

I was never truly pleased with the photos we got of the Double Big Mac on the day. So 18+ months later we revisited this burger and added up some new pictures…

Closest we've had in the UK that I can remember is the Hat-Trick, a triple-decker Big Mac sold while Euro'92 was taking place in Sweden.

back in the late 90s I ate a number of these from Rusholme McDonald's Wilmslow Rd Manchester. And they were good. Very good. Used to be a regular thing with my mate T. T is one of those guys who is as thin as a rake and made out of wires. He could eat this with ease whist I was really struggling and to add to my embarrassment would top it off with a bloody apple pie!! AAAAAGH.

The Mega Mac was definitely available on the main menu (albeit temporarily) at some point in the 90's. I also remember a fish fillet which you ate with a plastic knife and fork being available at one point.

The Megamac was available in the early 90s not late 90s as others have posted, also the guy who said he remembers a fish fillet he’s not referring to a fillet ‘o’ fish but the fish and chips they did around the late 90s they gave you vinegar and a tub of tartar sauce with it served in a rectangular box to be truthful the fish was pretty rank I’ve had better fish from the supermarket.
