The Summer Menu is available now at McDonald’s and today we are reviewing the Crispy Chicken Italiano.

Available alongside the returning (but tweaked again) Italian Stack, the Crispy Chicken Italiano is described as “A delicious crispy chicken fillet topped with a juicy tomato slice, mozzarella, a basil pesto style sauce, red onion and lettuce served up in a soft freshly toasted ciabatta style bun.”

Crispy Chicken Italiano

Firstly, I apologise for being a week late in getting to McDonald’s to sample this latest menu offering, so I appreciate some of you might have tried this one already.

Of course, the smartest UK McD’s fans will have first heard about this on the award-winning podcast and in our recent post confirming the Summer Menu.

Thank you again as ever Secret Sauce!!

Actually, thanks to the above, Wednesday 20th July will see the launch of MyMcDonald’s Rewards – basically earn points on purchases and then build up points to redeem against food/drink.

Sounds good to me…

Back to the new Chicken Sandwich/Burger.

11:30am is the absolute sweet-spot I’ve found to head to McDonald’s, especially ones with McDelivery as you miss the last breakfast orders being fulfilled and are ahead of those dreaded Midday Maccies Marauders.

It was dead inside and our food arrived promptly.

Now what I love about reviewing (McDonald’s) burgers is going into a review saying something along the lines of “I don’t even really want this but I have to review it.”

In fact, those were my exact words as I wasn’t expecting much. And to be honest with you, I really enjoyed it.

Strange, considering I have a strong aversion to fresh tomato and I really am not a massive fan of pesto but combined together it worked well.

I even ate the whole burger keeping the fresh tomato in. Good boy Burger.

Crispy Chicken Italiano

As you can see from the pictures, you could forgive me for calling it the “Summery Salad Burger” as there was a bit too much salad for my liking and in retrospect, could have done with a tad more red onion.

What I had forgotten was just how crispy that Homestyle Chicken fillet is and has a very satisfying crunch about it to the very last bite.

Impressive.

The cheese could definitely do with having some time to just melt a little which would be nice but no real complaints from me.

I liked the bun too and as we have now finally gone over the £5.00 mark for a McDonald’s promotional burger (yes I know this has probably been a while now) it did feel like quite a sizeable burger and did feel a bit premium.

I said a bit.

That basil pesto style sauce didn’t look appetising and as a non-pesto fan it worked really well with the crunchy chicken and salad. More red onion required.

Crispy Chicken Italiano

I’m not going to go over the top and proclaim this to be my favourite chicken burger from McDonald’s ever – that lofty accolade still sits with the Chicken & Chutney Indian (closely followed by the Thai Special).

But… but if they ever go down the route of those flavours with this Homestyle Chicken fillet we will certainly have a strong contender to that crown.

Go on McDonald’s – do it for me… one last time!

Crispy Chicken Italiano

Overall, the Crispy Chicken Italiano is a respectable LTO and I am certain it will have its detractors.

To be honest, I felt like one of them walking into our local restaurant but I came away feeling slightly guilty for pre-judging AND surprised how much I enjoyed it.

Would I have it again…?

That’s the clincher.

At £5.19 for the burger only it has to be a no from me, knowing I can get say two Double Cheese for approx. £3.40(?).

I’m glad I sampled one though and really am looking forward to part 2 of the Summer Menu.

What did you think of the Crispy Chicken Italiano? Thumbs-up, down or neutral…!?

It was ok .. I enjoyed it but it was lacking taste, it needed something else like an additional sauce, like a garlic mayo. Agreed, also required more red onion.

Well ive always been a one for Burgers from mcyds and chicken from KFC. But needing a late lunch today for the first time succumbed to the delicious look of the Chicken Italiano. “Wow” i loved it, i will consider it an option to my 1/4 Cheese or Big Mac from now on.
