McDonald’s Bacon Roll

McDonald’s Bacon Roll Review

McDonald’s Bacon Roll:

What they say:

It’s a classic – delicious bacon with your choice of tomato ketchup or brown sauce, served on a perfect bacon roll.

Price: £2.89/£4.39.

Calories: 356 kcal.

McDonald’s have re-vamped their Bacon Roll and today we will pit the old one against the new one to crown the undisputed heavyweight champion.

McDonald's New Bacon Roll

There’s been a bit of pre-release hype since the new Bacon Roll was announced Friday.

I swear somewhere I saw a website providing “expert commentary” that this is to rival the KFC (I Love You) Bacon Burger.

What!?

For starters, the ILYBB is an LTO which has now finished and it’s not really a breakfast sandwich is it?

I guess this is what happens when amateurs are reporting on what is coming next at McDonald’s.

If we could afford him, we would ask for Michael Buffer to introduce our two combatants, but in true Buffer style… “Let’s Get Ready To Rumble!!”

In the red corner, weighing in at 323/319 calories, the McDonald’s Breakfast Menu Mainstay… the OLD Bacon Roll.

McDonald's Old Bacon Roll

His challenger, in the blue corner (should that be brown?) weighing in at 356 calories, the Sourdough Hipster… the NEW Bacon Roll.

McDonald's New Bacon Roll

Before this battle for the ages, let’s take a look at the tale of the tape – the world awaits…

Round one. Fight!

Packaging:

Old – Served its purpose well. Nothing flashy. Just does what it says on the tin. RSPCA Assured logo. Freshly Made to Order sticker.

New – Doubles up as a wrapper for Brown Sauce or Tomato Ketchup. Less packaging (better for environment), slightly more sophisticated?

Points: Draw

Appearance/Bun:

Old – More a baguette than a roll. Been having these on and off for years before switching to Double Sausage & Egg McMuffins. Looks like a reasonable amount of food for your dosh.

Slightly crispy on the exterior but prone to the odd trace of sogginess (possibly from the old wrapper).

New – Certainly looks the part if the staff can actually get the rashers of bacon on the roll properly!

Definitely an enjoyable and more premium roll. Bun is exceptionally similar to the one used on the previously released BBQ Smokehouse and Sausage & Bacon Sandwich. Very floury like the Christmas Burger in 2017. Gets all over your hands. Needs napkins.

Points: New

Bacon:

Old – Two rashers of beechwood smoked back bacon.

New – Three rashers of beechwood smoked back bacon.

Judges notes: There are many people who do not like McDonald’s bacon. If they can get their bacon to the standard seen on the KFC I Love You Bacon Burger then this would be a seriously good breakfast bap.

Points: New

Sauce:

Both are (or have been) available with Tomato Ketchup or Brown Sauce. The old Bacon Roll was listed as having 323 kcal with brown or 319 kcal with red sauce.

The new Bacon Roll only lists one nutritional value (as of writing) which is 356 kcal.

Personally, I prefer the Brown Sauce option.

Points: No contest.

The contest has been more of a spar than a furious battle with the new Bacon Roll just edging the decision on points. We have a new champion!!

Overall, the new McDonald’s Bacon Roll is a decent update to the original and I definitely prefer the new bun and additional bacon. Mine seemed to have more sauce too but I don’t know whether that is an operational directive or not.

McDonald's New Bacon Roll

You’ll pay for the difference though.

And you’ll also pay a different price depending on which location you visit!

Today, I paid £3.19. Yes, £3.19.

At the restaurant I visited the other day to sample the old Bacon Roll, I paid £2.49 for that one. A quick check shows that the new one is selling today at £2.89. A marginal increase but then you are getting more bacon.

The cheapest I have seen the new Bacon Roll so far is £2.69 – so straight away there is a price spectrum of 50p depending on where you are.

In terms of customisation, you have got the following options:

– Add Bacon (+40p)
– Add Sauce (free)
– Add Sausage (+40p)
– Add Cheese (+20p)
– Add Egg (+40p)
– Add Folded Egg (+40p)

At time of writing, I could add extra bacon, sauce, sausage, cheese and egg for a total of £4.29.

McDonald's New Bacon Roll

If you’re a fan of the old Bacon Roll, I don’t see why you wouldn’t like the new update regardless of your sauce of choice.

For me though, if visiting McDonald’s for breakfast I will continue with the true champ – the mighty Double Sausage & Egg McMuffin.

Round bun means its easier to add a sausage on, you couldn’t customise the long roll with a round sausage

McDonalds know what they were doing with that move, and i’ll be upgrading every time

I don’t think anything will beat the double sausage & egg muffin. The grease in the sausage adds a delicious moistness to the meal which is missing from the bacon roll or any non sausage meal. Adding a floury bap hinders this even further in comparison to the mighty double. The only downside to the sausage is the Gobi desert like thirst you have afterwards.

I have tried the new bacon roll with brown sauce at 3 different locations around the country as I drive for a living, and have been disappointed every time.
The advertising on the tv says that it comes with Crispy bacon, however in my experience it looks more like boiled bacon, without any crispness you would expect from a “Crispy Smoked Bacon” roll.
If they can’t grill it to make it crisp, McDonald’s shouldn’t advertise it as so.
For now, I will get my bacon rolls from Greggs, which is generally crispy, and their Latté is nicer too….and cheaper….from £2.10 for a roll and medium coffee.
