KFC Double Down UK

Review of the KFC Double Down UK Secret Menu Item

What they say:

So much 100 percent premium chicken, we didn’t have room for a bun.

Price: £8.58.

Calories: 600 kcal.

The quest for secret menu items continues and Burger Lad® is back to create the KFC Double Down.

Now I know this isn’t technically a secret menu item but will we ever see this on-sale in the UK? I doubt it.

The KFC Double Down was released in the US way back in April 2010 and has since made appearances in countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Canada and South Africa.

The KFC Double Down…

It was Anthony from Twitter that gave us the idea and having not done a secret menu item since the Marty McFry burger it was time to recruit the original bWo members David Attenburger and The Commissioner for Secret Menu items to continue the quest.

An exciting TuesDDay started with the insider information of the Christmas Burger King promotional range so by the evening I was quite psyched for this new “Two for Tuesday” dining delight.

I impatiently waited outside for my fellow adventurers and managed to snap a few shots of the menu (prices coming soon on our website maybe?).

Eventually we were inside the restaurant, it was semi-busy and a group of children pinched the seats I had my eye on. Oh well.

All you need to create your own Double Down…

So how did we make the Double Down?

Well I ordered two Big Daddy Burgers and cringed at the total cost of nearly £9.00 – donations to Burger Lad please if you want to see stunts like this in the future!

I decided on the Big Daddy Burgers as the Double Down is made up of “bacon, two different kinds of melted cheese, the Colonel’s secret sauce… pinched in between two pieces of Original Recipe chicken fillets.”

OK so we had two slices of cheese that weren’t different and we were missing the secret sauce but this is as close as we’ll get in the UK folks.

My Double Down creation…

I asked for the mayo and ketchup to be left off both burgers (I had toyed with keeping the mayo on or using BBQ sauce) as I wanted this as close to the US version as possible.

The buns, lettuce, tomato and hash browns were ditched (they found a good home later on) and we built ourselves a Double Down.

“Where we’re going we don’t need buns…”

We filmed the latest quest for Burger Lad TV which you can see below and tucked into this dirty double delight.

It felt weird not to have the burger buns around the meat.

You get the solid taste of the Original Recipe chicken fillet breast and the cheese melts nicely between them. The bacon was semi-distinguishable and I don’t think the lack of sauce detracted from the overall flavour of this winner chicken dinner.

What I will say is that it is greasy. Very, very greasy and I wondered just how many calories are contained within the Double Down.

Once back at BLHQ I checked and was surprised it was “only” 600 calories. Your fingers get covered in the stuff and as you can see in the video it was literally dripping with it. Yum yum!

Beware the grease…!

I finished the Double Down and agreed that this would be the one and only time I would get it.

It was fairly enjoyable but most of all a bit of fun and we retired to the Burger Lab inspired to create more new secret menu items in the future.

So stay tuned… we’ll be back again soon! And if you have a suggestion get in touch as we might just go with your idea.

The KFC Double Down UK Secret Menu Item…

Will we see the Double Down in the UK ever? Your guess is as good as mine. I’d be tempted to try it once more with BBQ sauce in it but I think at nearly £9.00 and 600 calories I’ll leave it.

Here is the latest episode of Burger Lad TV. We may include the blooper reel soon.

If you are heading into your local KFC any time soon show them the pictures and tell them you want a Double Down – tell them Burger Lad® sent you.

And with that let us take one last look at the UK secret menu item KFC Double Down. It was a fun TuesDDay.

I had the 'pleasure' of a real double down in the US back in 2010 and it really wasn't very good. Dry tasteless chicken and much smaller than I expected. I think KFC in the UK is far superior to KFC in the US. looking forward to trying the new 'triple Xtra' this weekend.

Good report BL! It didn't look that appealing in all honesty. Last week I ordered to BK double cheeseburgers which I combined into one (ie) a 4 pattie cheeseburger. It wasn't that good and I didn't bother finishing it.
It set me thinking, as years ago I used to work for Wimpy International. These companies have their "test kitchens" where they trial products, and my thoughts were that the promotional items they offer from time to time have been thoroughly tested for taste etc.
That's not to say that SMI's can't be a success, rather that finding and discovering new ones is a bit hit and miss.

As a UK ex-pat living now in FL, I found this site seeing what McD's offers as breakfast items (no sausage egg and cheese biscuits? You're missing out!). Shame to see the Double Down still isn't offered there but honestly you're not missing much. I ordered one once due to a sever case of hangover belly and it was so good at first but then quickly became too much to handle ad I couldn't finish it – and I can normally put it away fairly well.

I agree with the poster above, though, that KFC in the UK is far superior to the US. No fries stateside for one which sucks as KFC fries were great in the UK!

One last thing, if you ever come to Orlando take a short trip to Winter Park (just North of Downtown Orlando) and go to BurgerFi. Amazing!

Used to eat it all the time back in KL, also used to get the New York extreme edge crust from Dominos, which you can't get in the UK either. In fact in KL when you order KFC they as if you want original or spicy chicken, the chicken, the spicy one is totally different, like obviously its spicy, but its also crunchier/crispier, there is something in the batter…..Doesn't seem right does it- Calling kfc skin batter?
