KFC Bacon & Cheese Burger

Review of KFC Bacon & Cheese Burger

What they say:

Our classic Original Recipe fillet burger topped off with cheese and bacon – need we say more?

Price: £3.99 (£4.99 for regular meal).

I like KFC and I’ve mentioned on these pages before that the Zinger is one of the very best High Street offerings around.

So when I discovered there was a Bacon & Cheese Burger (with chicken, obviously) I was more than just a little bit excited. After all, bacon makes everything better, right?

£5 gets you this…

Well no, as it turns out, it doesn’t, not all the time anyway. Let me tell you about it.

The KFC Bacon & Cheese Burger, quite simply, is a piece of original Fillet, topped with cheese and bacon, with a bit of mayo and lettuce as a bed. That’s it. It should be good, but for two things.

Firstly, the bacon did precisely nothing. I could see it. But it was thin and floppy and very small, and added no taste to the experience.

Secondly, ZINGER. Nowhere on the menu was there a Zinger option for this. But I was later extremely annoyed to discover, hidden away in the nutrition section of their website, that there was indeed a Zinger option that I had missed out on.

Inside, lots if lettuce and cheese…

That should be made clear – “would you like original Fillet or Zinger on that?” Not difficult. And it should be made clear for two reasons.

Firstly, it would have made this a lot better. And secondly it would have made this a lot better. Now I know that’s the same thing but it is so important it warrants being said twice. Irritation!

Original fillet has a very decent coating with a satisfying crunch, which was the most enjoyable part of this.

KFC’s chicken inside that coating is also darn tasty. But the bacon issue and the fact the cheese was nothing like melted, really spoiled it for me, even before I discovered I could have had a Zinger.

And KFC’s terrific chicken…

One saving grace was the spicy mayo – one of the tiny pots that comes as a free choice, I’m assuming for dipping fries into, but there’s no rule. No rule that says you can’t smear it on your burger, which I did, sort of.

I say sort of, because that was a lot harder than it needed to be. To smear it, I had a choice of fries or my fingers. Not wanting to make a mess of my fingers, and for once not having a wet wipe in my tray arsenal, I decide to smear with a fry.

That was very hard because KFC’s fries are quite soft and floppy. So I ended up having to use my finger after all, and deal with it using the single napkin I’d been given.

But i was glad I did. That tiny hit of heat did improve it but not enough to leave me thinking this was a great choice.

There isn’t a lot more to say about it, which is why this one is shorter than usual.

I definitely wouldn’t say “don’t go to KFC” (because you’d be missing out a lot – I do actually like KFC very much) but what I’m saying is “Go to KFC but order something else, and if you absolutely must order this, please, please get the Zinger one.”

As well as thicker bacon and perhaps more of it, this would have been really nice with BBQ Sauce and would be similar to the Chicken Legend Deluxe from McDonalds.
