Review of Home Sweet Home Cheeseburger Toastie

What they say:

We are a milk bar and kitchen in Manchester’s Northern Quarter serving up breakfast, brunch & dinner seven days a week. We make classic American dishes with high quality ingredients. House classic – seasoned beef patty, burger sauce, tomato, dill pickle, red onion and cheese.

Price: £4.50.

Calories: Unknown.

On the fringes of what constitutes a burger is this little gem from the mind of Almost Famous boss, Beau Myers. It’s pretty much a British take on the American patty melt.

And speaking of Myers, it was his recommendation that I try this, along with the better-still (but even less burger-like) brisket melt. That, along with the cookie pie and at least one milkshake, will have to be on the next visit.

A patty melt (see Rehab Burger Therapy review) is basically a burger on toast, rather than a roll or bun of some sort, while a Toastie is much more a British thing. Home Sweet Home also does tea, cakes, milkshakes and beer. I like all these things.

It’s also part of the Almost Famous empire, so we can’t really go wrong on taste either.

The Cheeseburger Toastie is “topped” with burger sauce, tomato and pickle as well as cheese, obviously and I’m really looking forward to it.

Looks like a toastie…

Home Sweet Home is kitted out like a sort of funky cafe, belying its rather extensive food menu. It’s a bar, it’s a restaurant, it’s a cafe. It’s basically all the stuff you’d have at home but better. Hence the name, presumably.

When it arrived, the classic two triangles of a Toastie took me back decades. Anyone who has ever been a student in Britain knows this very well.

It IS a toastie. A cheeseburger toastie…!

Taking my first bite, I got the pickles first. Not sure about this coming through first, as pickles aren’t my favourites. But I think it was only due to the positioning of the ingredients, and it was less noticeable in other mouthfuls.

Beyond the pickle, you get classic cheeseburger. None of the eye-watering, jaw-dropping stuff that makes Almost Famous, well, famous. A plain straightforward cheeseburger. In a Toastie. Why is this not more widespread?

Check this out. Simple but effective…

As a meal, it’s small. At this point of the day, I was happy with that. The price is pretty fair too, I thought.

Simplicity is not a usual Almost Famous thing. It’s usually outrageous, complex and dirty. But this was simple.

In fact, the whole ethos of Home Sweet Home seems to be the stuff you’d want to eat and drink at home. If they installed a comfortable sofa in here, I’d have my name branded on it, and stay for hours. I don’t think I’d be, or even am, the only one!

I’m waffling a bit now, and that’s courtesy of the midday heat and the house lager.

I’ll just finish this brief review with a nod to the excellent young man who served me on my visit. A very friendly welcome, an excellent first impression and loads and loads of lovely things to tuck into on future visits. I’ll most certainly be back.
