We received a DM through Twitter recently asking if we would like to go and try the brand new menu being launched by Frankie & Benny’s on Tuesday 10 June.

So after an exchange of emails we were presented with a nice shiny voucher entitling us to some money off the bill. Of course I won’t reveal to you just how much the amount was for otherwise you may brand Burger Lad® a sell-out.

I’d spent the day tweeting about some of the World Cup burgers that can be found across the globe and even noticed BK had sneaked out a new range of promotional burgers for the summer.

It was only then did I think “F&B’s… new menu! Must check. Must check!”

Having asked for a sneak preview of the menu a few days earlier (which was declined) I had been recommended the new Pulled Pork Burger – anyone that follows me on Twitter will have seen my own creation which features the pulled stuff so I thought I would go with this to put it up against my PFT.

Frankie & Benny’s Pulled Pork Burger…

Emailing a friend of mine, I informed him of my choice to which his response was “Pulled Pork. You surprise me.”

As the sarcasm meter in Outlook went through the roof I turned my attention to other burgers on the menu and spotted the F&B Black Pepper Mayo and BBQ Double Cheese Burger – both reviewed by Andrew recently.

So Miss Milkshake and I arrived promptly at F&B’s (this is possibly my third ever visit to one of their restaurants) and I went in with an open mind on the food, service and experience.

We were politely welcomed and shown to our table – a decently situated perimeter booth with good lighting (vital for those burger pics).

Our waiter for this evening was very commendable indeed. He was extremely polite, well-spoken and attentive without being overbearing once. Pleasing though was that this attitude was extended to all tables and not just our VIP table so hats off to you Sir.

“Can we get the Calzone and House Salad to start and share?” His eyebrows raised with a glimpse of admiration. “You can do what you want..” I liked this. After all this is F&B’s where you can eat what you like, when you want. None of this 12:00-2:00pm only nonsense here.

The Chicago Grinder Calzone (£11.25) landed on our table with a fanfare and believe you me this was very, very good! It didn’t last too long on the plate as having skipped lunch I was famished.

Top marks for the F&B Calzone…

After a respectable waiting time (I don’t like my main being brought to me too quickly) I was shocked when I was presented with a bun, pulled pork and a creamy mayo/coleslaw looking dip.

Something was not right. No 6oz burger patty! The waiter was ever so apologetic of the mistake and within a matter of minutes this was soon rectified (and a deduction from the bill as well – sweet).

Here in front of me sat the Frankie & Benny’s new Pulled Pork Burger. “We’ve put more pork on for you after the mistake” to which I let out a semi-whimper after having had my fair share of the Calzone to start.

This was a massive, meaty monolith of mayhem!

I took a bite and got an instant BBQ sauce hit. There was loads of the sauce on it as well as a considerable amount of mayo. The pulled pork was fairly enjoyable, slightly mushy in texture would be my only criticism and I commented that it was “nearly as good as mine.”

“Do you want pork with that pork…?”

The 6oz beef patty was cooked well-done but was juicy and I could distinguish a beef flavour which was not lost amongst the lashings of BBQ sauce and pulled pork.

This was my very first F&B’s burger and I did wonder if these are freshly handmade or if they are delivered in frozen to the premises. I’m not too sure and I forgot to ask.

The salad items on-board were like Cyndi Lauper, good enough – I even had a couple of bites of the burger as it was intended with the fresh tomato on-board. Hey… a guy is allowed to change his mind isn’t he!?

Plenty of BBQ sauce…

The red onion was a welcome addition to the Pulled Pork Burger cause its distinctive, sharp flavour was required to cut through the pile of Double P (DP) which adorned the beef patty.

Special mention goes to the thick cut pickles which are always a winner and these provided a sweet, pickled punch.

Unfortunately, due to the mammoth stack of pulled pork, all that BBQ sauce and the mayo this all contributed to the top burger buns downfall.

Due to this overload the bun did start to come apart during this eating event and things got quite messy very quickly. But who doesn’t like a bit of mess…!? In fact if you don’t go and order the plain cheese or whatever.

The fries were amazing and were like a semi-hybrid of McDonald’s meets Burger King but better and I really enjoyed dipping them in the tangy, smoky tomato-chilli relish. Good… very good!

Pictured here, the bacon & cheese fries…

Overall, I enjoyed the Pulled Pork Burger and would recommend giving it a try.

The thing that stood out for me the most though was that Calzone and we talked to the manager after about returning to try the £11.95 2-course special menu which features the Spicy Sausage Calzone.

It was an excellent evening, good service, good food and I can’t thank Frankie & Benny’s enough for inviting us to try their new menu.

As we walked off into the night a guy walked past us, saw Miss Milkshake and said out loud “lucky lad.” Well Miss Milkshake couldn’t have put it any better after we had finished laughing. “It’s not lucky lad… it’s Burger Lad®.”

And with that I’ll leave you with a glimpse at my own Pulled Pork Burger, the PFT – just in case you think I don’t know what I’m going on about.

PFT = Pretty Effin’ Tasty…
