Yes I know Domino’s is a pizza chain, but it has quite recently added The Cheeseburger pizza to the menu so I couldn’t keep away.
Burger-type pizzas are not new, and I’ve had at least two before. The other thing to note is that Domino’s is quite expensive for what you get.
My local pizza / kebab place gives you just as much for a little over half the price. They don’t do a cheeseburger pizza though!
You’ll be wondering if it’s any good, and we will come to that, but first let’s explore the build.
At Domino’s, barring rare mistakes, you get a very good presentation, with each slice usually containing the same ingredients. And those ingredients here are ground beef, red onion, cheese and pickles.
There were three base options, all so similar that I can’t even remember which one I chose.
There was one with a stuffed crust which I didn’t choose, and the wonderful double decadence base has now vanished (a strange decision as it didn’t involve any additional ingredients).
Instead of developing a specific burger beef topping, they’ve elected to use the ground beef pieces that have always been on the menu.
For the purposes of cost and logistics, this makes sense. However, while the ground beef is a good choice for some of the other pizzas on the menu, it doesn’t help much with the supposed burger flavours.
Cheese is cheese and it’s something that pizzas and cheeseburgers share. Again here, what we get is the same cheese that is on the other pizzas.
So far, so same.
And that really leaves it up to the pickle to carry the “burger” element.
That in itself is problematic because while some classic cheeseburgers do have pickles, it’s not a core element and by this stage I was wondering if the name of this pizza was perhaps a little out of reach.
It’s a tomato-based pizza with some toppings, and if I really concentrated hard, I’d think of a cheeseburger.
Yes, the pickles mainly pushed me in that direction, but remember I’ve also had a fair few burgers in my time.
This, even taking into account its pizza shape, wasn’t really a cheeseburger. And the main letdown was missing a crucial topping – the burger sauce!
As a pizza, it was enjoyable and I have to say, burgers aside, adding the pickles is an interesting innovation.
There is far more of a burger smell than taste, although the aftertaste does have very faint notes of classic burgers.
Living up to its name, I’m not sure if it works, but simply as a pizza, not at all bad.
I give a high five to Domino’s for trying, for the innovation, for bringing something a little different.
