Review of Burger King’s Flame-Grilled Beef Flatbread

Price: £4.29 for the “burger” only, £5.70 for the meal.

Back in March 2012, Burger King released the Lamb Flatbread and worryingly that evaded the “Burger Radar”. Fast forward nearly twenty months later and BK quietly release two new varieties.

I stumbled across these by looking on their Facebook page one evening and saw a pixelated picture of what was to be a new product revealed that week. Although not excited my interest levels had been raised. By the picture it was obvious it was some sort of open kebab style bread with meat and salad. The next night I checked the website and the beef and chicken limited time flatbreads were there…

I didn’t bust a gut to go and check these out. In fact it was a casual trip into town that resulted in me getting the opportunity to savour the flavour of the latest promotional item from the King and Co. So how did they taste?

We’ll get to that in a minute. I had to endure a very long wait just to get served and it reminded me of the time I had the Angry Whopper.

There was literally one person serving while the queue got bigger and bigger behind me. I looked on in disbelief as an employee walked past carrying a mop and wondered why she was unable to assist in taking orders or collecting food. The loud blare of the music from the speaker directly above my head did not help either.

Eventually I was served and waited an additional five minutes for these to be made up by the one member of staff responsible for making up my char-broiled chums. Eventually I was given my order and took myself off to a table.

The flatbreads are served in decorative wrap packaging and I wondered how these would look as wallpaper at Burger Lad HQ.

After the usual photo shoot (which generated a few curious glances) I took my first bite. You get the usual taste of the trademark BK flame-grilled patty alongside a short, sharp hit of fresh onion. The steakhouse sauce is the usual variety found on the Angus Steakhouse range and the mayo gave the whole thing a degree of moisture. All combined together made for a somewhat satisfying snack on the go.

The real BK Flame-Grilled Beef Flatbread…

There was a generous amount of fresh lettuce found on this with some tomato slices both under and above the beef patty. The thing that impressed me the most however was the actual flatbread itself as it was fresh, springy, flecked with rosemary and was a welcome change to the usual buns available. The only disappointing thing about the Flame-Grilled Beef Flatbread was that it did just feel like a burger slapped in a new type of bread.

The bread is something different…

I was disappointed not to have tried the Lamb version in 2012 especially after a Google search revealed the description of having “spices, crisp salad, chilli ketchup and mint yoghurt sauce”. Oh well… maybe next time.

I’d certainly like to see them release a Kofta style version just to fool you into thinking you are having something just a little bit different. Why not be really brave and try some sort of German style bratwurst flavour patty with a Currywurst sauce or Sauerkraut? Just a thought…

Don’t take good pictures with an audience…

However this beef version (I think it was a Whopper patty), did not disappoint and having skipped lunch did not last long. At 539 calories it is relatively low on the calorie scale and I was fortunate enough to try the chicken version (447 calories) too and the winner on this chicken “dinner” was the mint yoghurt sauce.

I would bet this is the last limited time promotion from Burger King before their Christmas campaign but I am happy to be proved wrong because it will present us with another review opportunity. As I finish this latest review I am thinking about the next 21st century burger adventure and this one is going to be good so stay tuned!

Overall I was quite impressed with the flavours and textures on both the beef and chicken flatbreads. I don’t think either will make a serious dent in the late night kebab crowd (no chilli sauce) but if you find yourself in BK and fancy something slightly different these may be worth a shout. At £4.29 it is quite expensive in my opinion especially with Real Burger just around the corner.
