First stop on our Burger Tour of Arizona is Smashburger. Now, this is an important one because it’s coming to the UK very soon.
So, in a Burger Lad® exclusive, we give you a taste of the future – the Smashburger Classic Smash Burger.
First things first, the chain isn’t named Smashburger because it has robotic Martians mocking our human eating habits. No, it’s named after the method of putting together the patties. We’ll come back to that.
With my mind set on the local classic, the Arizona Smash, I was disappointed to find that this branch in the airport didn’t do it. No matter, it allowed me to try their basic cheeseburger which is far more likely to be an offering on the British menu.
Service is of the sort where you place your order at the counter, take a seat and wait for your name to be called. It didn’t take too long. It wasn’t particularly busy at that time. I got back up, collected my wrapped burger, and sat down to enjoy. Service was very much with a smile at this Skyport branch. The chap at the counter took my BurgerLad.com card and seemed genuinely delighted we were there to visit.
Anyway, onto the burger. The first thing I noticed was the yellow tinge of the bun. Well they do call it an egg bun, so it certainly lives up to that. Inside, there was a lot going on. Ketchup, lettuce, red onions, pickle and that yellowy American cheese. As well as the smashed patty, of course.
It wasn’t massive, but it looked very enticing. There were quite a few primary colours in there, and I was hungry.
Before tucking in, I got some extra shots of the patty itself. You can see the effect of smashing the meat – it’s less dense and a lot more knobbly and misshapen than other fast food patties. So how did it taste?
Well, pretty damn good actually. I was impressed. With my first few bites I got a real cross section of flavours.
The beef itself was meaty and strong, just how it should be. It smacked of a much higher quality than its price would suggest. The lettuce was extremely generous and fresh, and added just a hint of crunch. The cheese was semi melted atop the patty, which is exactly what should happen on a good fast cheeseburger.
But the real stars of the show here were the pickles and red onions, giving a sweet and tart savoury kick to the whole thing, cutting right through the meat, the cheese and the eggy bread.
Real terrific stuff and we are really looking forward to the arrival of Smashburger in the UK. Watch this space.
