Review of McDonald’s Limited Time Offer Quarter Pounder Deluxe with Bacon
What they say:
A delicious burger made with 100% beef patty, shredded lettuce, a slice of tomato, one slice of cheese, two pickle slices, fresh onions, cool mayo, ketchup, mustard and streaky bacon all in a round sesame topped bun.
Price: £4.89 as part of a value meal, 30p extra to go large.
Calories: 560 kcal for the burger only.
As part of the ‘Monopoly Fortunes’ promotion McDonald’s has tested the water by sneaking out two promotional items – the Quarter Pounder Deluxe and the Quarter Pounder Deluxe with Bacon.
So what makes a Quarter Pounder ‘Deluxe’? It seems adding mayo, lettuce, tomato and removing one slice of cheese pimps up the standard burger to the Deluxe version. We added some bling to our burger by opting for the Bacon Deluxe.
Looks pretty tasty in the promotional picture…
Now this review was completely unplanned (having already done a review or two in the last seven days) but as we went through the McDrive my resistance buckled. I was also served by my favourite employee – the guy from our infamous Double Big Mac video which you can see here.
This would be my first quarter pounder since 1999. Back in those days I was more a ‘burger baby’ as I had everything ‘plain’ due to my phobia of ketchup, mustard and mayo. I remember it well as I was at University at the time. On that occasion I bit into the burger and grease shot out straight over my t-shirt, and I decided that would be my first and last Quarter Pounder. Until now…
The burger didn’t look much like the promotional picture – the patty seemed a lot thicker than the one I was presented with. At first we thought the bacon had been forgotten but just as I was about to detonate we found it safely tucked away between the beef and cheese.
The real Quarter Pounder Deluxe with Bacon…
I did not give my condiment fears one thought as I took my first bite of a Macca’s Quarter Pounder in nearly 15 years. I noticed that the burger was really very dry and any moistness was provided by the slop of sauces on board. I could not pick out any distinct flavour of the triangle of terror (mustard, mayo, ketchup) but to be honest the combined taste of everything on the Deluxe with Bacon was quite pleasant.
I don’t think I would get one again but I am glad I gave it a try. The promised ‘fresh onion’ was missing in action and one has to wonder if it would have saved the day. The bacon had a slightly smoky flavour and it worked quite nicely with the lettuce and cheese. It was a very dry burger patty and lack of attention to detail that failed this promotional item.
Missing onions and hidden bacon. Mustard…?
Special mention to the fries as they were some of the best I’ve ever had from McD’s. They were hot, crispy and just cooked for slightly longer than the usual limp, anaemic offerings.
So with Burger King releasing what I thought was a fairly lazy promotional item it seems McDonald’s have copied them with this attempt. I still think that after all the negativity over the horsemeat scandal that the big two are just going with the softly softly approach for now. I’ll be waiting for the next big hitter in the meantime…
